Chaotic Harmony Imports Feuds With Customers and Fans Over Social Media
A situation brewing on Twitter came to a head on September 1st, 2021, as Chaotic Harmony Imports responded to accusations that their signed cheki (polaroid pictures that bands sell as merchandise) are forged and that the translations provided during live events were inaccurate.

Chaotic Harmony Imports is based in Los Angeles, California, first registered in 2016 according to currently accessible government records and their press releases online. Its owners are Melissa Goldberg and Haley Marinovich. However, the business appears to be set up as a sole proprietorship and has no LLC or corporation listed with the Secretary of State in California that I could find. Their names do not appear on the company's about page, but they are known to their frequent customers and have used their names when interviewed about their work online.
Chaotic Harmony Imports started as an online shop selling official visual-kei CDs, merchandise, cheki, and other products. They have since branched out to cover idol groups and began booking shows at anime conventions and Japanese cultural events. In an average year, meaning pre-pandemic, they host multiple events across the country each year.
Both owners came from the visual-kei fan community. Haley came into the scene at the beginning of its peak in popularity within the United States, in 2007 when it became relatively easy to access. Melissa revealed in an online interview that she found her interest due to her passion for Anime music. "I started watching YouTube videos and discovered visual kei and other forms of Japanese music. There was no going back after that."
During this time, there were very few official YouTube channels; most of the PV's online had been illegally uploaded by fans. Piracy was rampant in the United States visual-kei fandom due to the cost of importing through official channels and the lack of Japanese label participation in YouTube and then emerging streaming services like Pandora or Spotify. It turned into a source of contention between fans who felt entitled to listen to music for free and businesses who wanted to turn a profit.
Most of the businesses that sprung up to address this were, and continue to be, both amateur and fan-run. Even experienced professionally helmed operations have mostly gone under since then as interest in visual-kei music has waned in the United States. Since 2007 we've seen the appearance and closure of many businesses like HearJapan, MaruMusic, and the various live-streamed radio stations that also attempted to turn themselves into agencies.
If you're a visual-kei fan in 2021, businesses like Chaotic Harmony are an essential opportunity to keep the VK subculture alive. They offer the chance to purchase merchandise and CDs without steep import shipping costs, dollar to yen conversion fees, long shipping times, or the hassle of finding a shopping service when Japanese band management refuses to ship internationally.
When the pandemic took hold of the world in 2020, the music industry suffered greatly in the United States and Japan. Performing at live houses to sell tickets and merchandise is the lifeblood of most visual-kei bands. Conventions and live shows were mainly canceled, which threw the music industry into chaos. As a result, many bands attempted to move their activities online.
In April 2020, Chaotic Harmony responded by launching a "Cheki in the Time of Coronavirus project." They organized a pre-sale for personalized cheki from 27 visual-kei bands and 17 idol or Japanese pop artists. Customers were allowed to choose which band member they wanted a cheki from and that it would both be autographed and personalized with their name.
The press release for the project was upfront that this type of project would take a significant amount of time to ship and complete because the bands had to wait until they could get together to create the cheki safely, then sit down and autograph each one.
Personalized autographs can be a stressful project to manage for everyone involved. First, the band members must ensure that all the names are written accurately to avoid offending their fans. Then, due to shipping costs and timeframes, management must double-check everything to ensure that nobody is forgotten. Finally, when the orders are eventually shipped out, great care has to be used to ensure that each autograph goes to the right place.
Chaotic Harmony was also upfront that they were going through a middleman to get the cheki completed. "Because this is such a big project for us, we've called on a few Japanese industry professionals to help us. These people are NOT officially affiliated with Chaotic Harmony," the press release read. This decision may, or may not, be where something went wrong.
In one of the updates that Chaotic Harmony posted to Twitter, they explained the pricing structure of the cheki, which seemed to indicate that it wasn't an entirely altruistic project. Both their business and the middlemen responsible for obtaining the signatures split the difference after the bands received their cut. The project intended to give the lion's share back to the artist and help offset their own pandemic losses.
Many of their customers appeared to be happy with their purchases after shipping in October 2020. Chaotic Harmony retweeted photos from several of them.
Chaotic Harmony proudly shared that they sold a total of 1,590 cheki on Twitter, then invited everyone to join them on their Discord server. Finally, they thanked their customers, the staff, project partners, and Cure Magazine.
On October 29th, 2020, a Twitter user posted, "I noticed something, all the people who bought autographed cheki with chaotic Harmony, all have the same handwriting for names ! Eehhh yes it is not the bando who signed but the person who sells them.. Sorry."
The tweet didn't go viral, but it set off several subtweets amongst the community and some chatter that the autographs themselves may not be authentic, despite the original tweet calling only the personalization (the customers' names) into question. Realizing that she had been misunderstood, the original poster even clarified in a subsequent tweet that it wasn't the signatures she questioned, just the customer names.
Over the next year, Chaotic Harmony hosted in-store events on their Discord server. They feature a link to this Discord server on the upper-right corner of their website, above the fold, which is considered prime real estate in digital marketing. Anyone can join with the link. The link has been promoted on their social media channels and used as an event space for their Timora Talks events, which means that this space is publicly viewable to anyone who visits their website. Fans, potential clients, current clients, and staff in the music industry are all visitors to this public server. As long as you can read English or use a machine translator, you can see the unfiltered thoughts of both of Chaotic Harmony's owners while you are there.
On September 1st, 2021, Haley posted to the main wall of their Discord server, "Regular reminder that we do not, have not, and will not forge cheki signatures. If that rumor could stop being spread that'd be fantastic."
This set off a flurry of messages between the owners, staff, and customers over the next few days.
"I'll say this," she continued. "Don't expect personalized products again for a long time"
Later in the conversation, she added, "I'm sorry to the people who aren't acting like loons on Twitter."
One of their customers suggested that they get the bands themselves to step in, and Melissa responded with, "We are definitely considering that."
At 6:16 PM Chaotic Harmony posted an official statement to their Twitter account, then went back to their Discord server to ask customers to like and retweet it. The message consisted of several tweets and text on an image. The original tweet posting the photo read as follows:

The attached image read as follows:
"For a while, we have noticed rumors circulating that we have either forged customers' names or the artist signatures on the cheki sold through our website. While we originally hoped ignoring the rumors would allow them to die down as such rumors often do, they've continued to spread and we've decided we have no choice but to publicly address them.
Chaotic Harmony has never forged names, signatures, or anything else and we will never do so. Last year, when the pandemic was first taking its hold on the world, we organized a cheki project which helped raise money not only to keep our own webshop going, but support artists and other industry professionals during a time when things were very dark. In this project, we featured 27 bands, 17 idols, and raised $15,917 that went directly to artists and industry in Japan. It is a feat that we're honestly proud of.
At the root of it all, Chaotic Harmony isn't the only entity being harmed by these rumors. To say that the names and signatures have been forged devalues the hard work of the artists involved in our cheki project, pre-orders, and any other products. It also is hurtful to the fans who have received these items, which were prepared with care by the artists. These rumors are frankly an insult to the bands that the people spreading them claim to support.
However, for the time being, we have decided that we will cease offering services in which the artists personalize any products with customer names, as the rumors are a personal affront to their time, dedication, and energy. Please understand that when they personalize the cheki and other products, great care goes into ensuring that no errors are being made in the spelling of names, which most often are in a language that is foreign to them. We apologize to the customers and fans who are not part of this problem for any inconvenience or disappointment this decision may cause.
Additionally, we've seen some concerns regarding our product pricing. We pay the bands an agreeable amount for all of our inventory, while we're left with the cost of importing. Occasionally the products will be marked up by maybe $5 to help compensate for the costs of importing while also making sure that the artists are paid an amount that they deem fair. From the moment that Chaotic Harmony was conceived as a business, we had support of the artists at the core of our business model and it remains so today. At the end of the day, we are still a business and must make sure we are able to continue as such.
We want to sincerely apologize to any of our clients or customers who have been hurt by these rumors. Please know that we will continue to strive to put forth the best customer service possible. We've always been transparent about our business operations and are more than willing to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. You may contact us on social media or send an email to info@chaotic-harmony.net.
Lastly, we want to offer thanks to those of you who have offered continuous support over the past five years. It means more to us than we can ever say."
The statement held that customers who were unhappy or had questions did not support the bands and even directly insulted the bands. They apologized to the customers who were not involved that wouldn't be able to buy this type of product in the future but not to the customers who had become concerned that they had wasted their money.
The statement also didn't seem to understand that nobody blamed the artists or accused them of anything. I found no evidence of this at the time of writing this article. Some that I spoke to seem to think that it's possible that someone along the supply chain added the names on some of the cheki to make things easier for bands, as similar handwriting does not appear on all of the bands cheki. The autographs themselves do seem to be genuine.
If this was the case, then Chaotic Harmony hadn't done anything wrong, but their handling of this situation pitted fans against fans in the replies and cast judgment on who is or isn't a good fan based on whether or not they were asking questions.
Then, all hell broke loose as official band and industry accounts started tweeting, retweeting, and even responding directly to fans to support Chaotic Harmony's statement. It happened so quickly, and because it was happening in English, the fans I talked to began to question if Chaotic Harmony had orchestrated it behind the scenes. To them, it felt manipulative. To Chaotic Harmony's fans, it felt like a victory.
"Certainly we all wrote the autograph by ourselves. It's the truth. Don't be fooled by unfounded rumors. Thanks. THE SOUND BEE HD"
"All members of ANONYMOUS put our signatures on them ourselves with sincerity.
I hope that all who have bought them like them. Thanks😊" - Nimo, ANONYMOUS
"I signed them myself!" - SARSHI
One response that stood out, in particular, was from the Jiluka official Twitter account. A fan replied to Chaotic Harmony's statement. They have since deleted their tweet, so I won't repost it to respect their privacy, but Jiluka responded directly to them. I've blotted out identifying information.
Furthermore, the account of one of the band's members liked this tweet to support it.
I asked an industry insider how common this is because this is not something I have ever seen before on the English side of band Twitter, but I wasn't sure if this could happen on the Japanese side of band Twitter. They were adamant that this is something that never happens and is extremely direct and rude.
"Bands will never risk upsetting fans unless fans are breaking their rules, and even then, they are very careful. You can't shit where you eat," they responded.
The blame for this situation cannot be placed on Jiluka, any of the other bands involved, or Chaotic Harmony without more evidence of what took place behind the scenes. Unfortunately, at this time, there is no way to know if the bands fully understood the tone or content of the English tweets they published, the entire context of the situation, or what conversations had taken place to cause this.
Chaotic Harmony then retweeted a fan who was asking questions to their timeline with the response, "Since artists themselves are having to clear their names as well and responding, I believe you and that whole thread of people have your answers."
However, it is unclear why the artists need to clear their names since they were not accused of anything.
Some fans posted tweets indicating that they think the writing is so similar because all Japanese people write English similarly enough that it would be difficult to distinguish who wrote what.
Consulting a "handwriting expert" is beyond the scope of most visual-kei music fans, and authenticating the written names of these photos would be impossible without the band members supplying handwriting samples for the expert to compare to the cheki. People employed in this profession typically work with lawyers on court cases as expert witnesses, though some identify autographs of celebrities.
No two people write the same, and the handwriting of adults continues to change over time. For this reason, handwriting experts will often require handwriting samples that have been written within the last few years to compare to a document in question.
None of the people I talked to who regularly work with native Japanese speakers and no Japanese native speakers I spoke to think that Japanese people all write English the same way. If you compare the written names on some of the other cheki that Chaotic Harmony sold to the cheki in question, it seems pretty clear that this is not the case.
While more than one person can have similar handwriting, it seems unlikely that an entire band has near-identical writing. Of course, this doesn't negate the customers' experience who left these comments, but I think this means that it's not a given that all Japanese people write English the same way.
Haley later returned to the server to talk about the responses that they were getting.
Haley said, "I want it to be known. That's how these weirdo's comparing handwriting look to me. Please, find a hobby. Can I suggest knitting? I hear it's relaxing. And It'd keep your hands busy so you stay off Twitter."
After suggesting others get off the social media platform, Haley continued to rant about the happenings on Twitter. She described an incident where a fan had been banned from their events. Essentially, talking poorly about a customer she didn't like to all of the other customers - in full public view.
"I don't want to scare off new customers, that's why we made a statement," Haley later explained on the server.
Reaching out to influential brand fans and brands that are friendly with you for support and to help in spreading your message is recommended by Twitter - but this does not work great in the context of the visual-kei industry. Bands jumping into the fray jeopardize their brand and relationship with their customers. A new customer coming onto their Twitter feed will witness how they treat unhappy customers and how the bands allowed themselves to be weaponized against people just like them. It misses the opportunity to turn a negative experience into a positive one.
A social media expert I talked to said that, "This was the perfect opportunity for them to showcase their customer service skills. They could have offered refunds to anyone unhappy, and most people would have just been happy with the offer of a refund - they wouldn't have taken them up on it. They could have also vowed to investigate the matter and talk to their overseas partners or pledge to bring on a professional interpreter for future events. But, instead, they went with an emotionally charged attack. You should never accuse your customer of lying when they are confused or upset."
Haley later returned to post in the Discord server, "We've also decided to stop hosting any of our own online events, free or otherwise, for the time being." She later added, "So when y'all are getting less direct events with bands thank Twitter for p*ssing in your cereal."
Twitter had by then devolved into a mess with fans arguing with each other, partially goaded on by the owners of Chaotic Harmony and the bands themselves getting involved. Yet, that wasn't the only thing argued. There was still the incident that partially sparked this entire riot - Hyper Japan.
Hyper Japan took place on August 8th, 2021, and featured a live stream of never before released concert footage as well as a live Q&A session with the band members themselves. Unfortunately, there is not a recording of this event that I can view myself, but I talked to multiple sources who paid for and attended this event themselves.
The event details advertised, "translator included." However, according to one attendee I spoke to, it was clear to them that the interpreter was not fluent in Japanese. Furthermore, they had been warned by another fan to always submit questions to the band in Japanese instead of relying on Chaotic Harmony's interpretation despite two interpreters being present at the event.
Multiple attendees felt that band members were having difficulty understanding the interpretation and that the interpreter was struggling to translate even simple questions from English to Japanese. Allegedly, band members had to correct the pronunciation of their own names multiple times.
More than one person felt the leading interpreter was becoming frustrated because she muttered into the mic, "... don't do this to me," when one of the band members explained that he wanted to tour with another well-known band. Fans also mentioned that there was an issue translating the title of a song that Jiluka was promoting.
I found mentions on Twitter of a fan providing translation in the chat window during the live event. The attendees I spoke to confirmed that they saw the band respond to the translations that this person provided in the chat. According to them, the staff from Chaotic Harmony had even thanked this person over the mic when they offered some interpretation suggestions.
According to other sources, this is not the first time this has occurred at Chaotic Harmony events.
In response to this, Chaotic Harmony posted another statement to Twitter on September 2nd.
"With regard to the concerns about our online events, they are translated by the owners of Chaotic Harmony. Both of whom have been speaking Japanese for many years and one of whom has taken and passed the N2. (1/4)
Live translation is extremely difficult, and we are human so sometimes there are small mistakes or a moment of confusion often involving pop culture references we may not be familiar with. (2/4)
However, the bands who have done events with us have had no trouble understanding the interpretation provided.
Under no circumstances have bilingual attendees ever had to do our jobs for us, nor have we ever used Google translate. (3/4)
When concerns were raised after the event in question, we reached out to the other parties involved and were assured that there was no issue with the translation quality. (4/4)"
On the Discord server Melissa took a slightly different approach.
“For what it’s worth, live translating has never been my strong suit. I get nervous and tongue-tied and blank out.
I have been working on getting better at it and have improved over the years.
Unfortunately with the pandemic it’s been extremely difficult to maintain the same level of fluency I have when I’m able to travel to Japan frequently.
I can acknowledge that the event people are complaining about wasn’t my best work but it certainly wasn’t complete and utter incompetence either. There was a backup translator there as well in case it was deemed necessary.
I missed a few words, a few names of things I wasn’t familiar with. I apologize and I’m trying to get better every day.
With regards to the claims that the band “needed” someone else’s translations in the chat to understand, I do fully do not believe that to be the case. They understood my question translations perfectly well.
I would appreciate being shown a little bit of grace when I’m doing my best. If the translation quality didn’t meet certain peoples’ expectations, then I am sorry and like I said I’m doing what I can to improve.”「何を隠そう、生の翻訳は私の得意分野ではありません。
One thing that needs clarification is the difference between a translator and an interpreter. A translator works with written material, and an interpreter translates oral speech. Therefore, a translator is not necessarily qualified to work as a live interpreter.
According to the ADA, "A "qualified" interpreter means someone who is able to interpret effectively, accurately, and impartially, both receptively (i.e., understanding what the person with the disability is saying) and expressively (i.e., having the skill needed to convey information back to that person) using any necessary specialized vocabulary."
A qualified interpreter would need to be able to translate effectively from Japanese to English and from English to Japanese, and they need to be able to do this on the fly. Specialized vocabulary in this situation would include words that commonly come up in visual-kei interviews, song titles, music vocabulary, and pop culture.
Professional interpreters often have licenses related to their particular skill, receive ongoing training, and are bilingual. To provide this service professionally, they have to understand the languages they speak at a near-native level. They are also costly to hire.
I asked someone who has worked with Anime conventions for over a decade about the difficulty of getting hired as an interpreter and was told that most conventions don't test anyone's ability to interpret, don't require references, or don't bother to check them.
Most interpreters at anime conventions are volunteers, and you can't impose rigid job qualifications if the position is unpaid. However, the Anime conventions I found with online information recommended passing the JPLT exam at least at the N2 level. N1 is the most challenging level, and N5 has the least difficulty from this series of tests.
When I asked about whether or not N2 would be considered a good enough level to work as an interpreter, they responded that "N2 is very base-level and not enough for the anime industry."
In an interview about her work as an interpreter, Melissa previously said, "Trying to explain the concept of an anime convention is always a challenge. In addition, trying to keep the flow of information organized is always a challenge because no matter how proficient we are in Japanese, it's still our second language and miscommunication and confusion is bound to happen."
Yet, as someone who's been interpreting for a decade - it's a bit strange that explaining an Anime convention is a challenge for her when Anime conventions also take place in Japan and have been the primary way for Visual-Kei artists to get to America for more than a decade. Interpreting at anime conventions is where she started and continues to be her main avenue of work. This specialized vocabulary is something that she should be uniquely qualified to understand.
The JPLT exam tests reading and listening skills. There isn't an oral exam, and the reading questions are multiple-choice. Even passing the N1 level of this exam does not necessarily qualify someone to be an interpreter if their listening skills are far more advanced than their speaking skills. An interpreter must be able to do both.
In a setting like the visual-kei industry or the anime industry, it may be impossible for a company as small as Chaotic Harmony to hire a professional translator. Most American visual-kei companies are simply not profitable enough to hire any kind of help at all. Yet, it would be an improvement for everyone to understand how these different skill sets work. Having a native Japanese speaker assisting with their event interpretation could be an incredible asset if they could find one who is willing to work as a volunteer.
Melissa once said herself, "It is very rare for us to come across an artist who says they have no interest in playing overseas. They are very passionate about their music, and the idea of their work reaching a global audience is something that really appeals to them."
Every fan I've talked to about the visual kei industry in America feels a deep emotional connection to the music and bands they love.
Because of that, they generally want to see American-based businesses become successful so that they can continue to bring bands overseas for concerts and make other events accessible to the international fan community.
Even the fans I spoke with who were deeply offended by something Chaotic Harmony had said to them didn't want to come across as wanting to see them fail. Nor did they want their perspectives to be used to bring them down.
They wanted their feedback to influence Chaotic Harmony to improve future events so that the artists they love will continue to work with them and not have a negative impression of the American side of this industry. Although a fan-run business, its customers desire it to operate professionally so that the Japanese music industry will feel comfortable working with them.
One source told me during our conversation, "There's an acceptable degree of human error, and I think it's not so much about perfect accuracy the way translation can be, but more about making the language barrier as small as possible and helping shorten the distance between fans and the guests, right?"
They continued, "What Chaotic Harmony did was make that distance FURTHER, which I find really unforgivable for a paid service." They also told me, "I'm a fan who wants these bands to come back to my country! So stuff like this really upsets me, because they might never come back if that's the way that they're received over here."
This scenario is a visual-kei fans' worst nightmare, and if it continues to play out across social media, not only do they lose - but the bands and Chaotic Harmony do too.
